Asks if he would sell him the coal stove he has in his basement; Hopkins writes a reply on same sheet of paper telling him that he wouldn't sell but can purchase one for about $50 by Edwin JaCKSON AT 50 bEEKMAN sTREET.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
